To banish any hint of claustrophobia and flood the interiors with an abundance of natural light and air, a dramatic, expansive atrium was strategically incorporated, giving the illusion of a far larger space. Adding to this spatial wizardry is a “skip floor” design, a clever manipulation of levels that discreetly tucks the bathroom and a bedroom between floors, simultaneously carving out valuable extra storage beneath the elevated kitchen. A Curated Welcome: The Entrance as a Statement From the moment you approach, the Tsubo House commands attention, defying every expectation. The entrance itself is a bespoke masterpiece: a striking, custom-made 4.8-meter iron aperture, envisioned as a grand, oversized door crowned with an elegant arched window. The architect deliberately called it an “arrogant element,” and you can see why—it boldly sets a unique and luxurious tone. Inside, this magnificent door features a custom “dress-like coating,” a thoughtful detail crafted by a fabric designer to provide both privacy and a touch of sartorial artistry. The entrance wall isn’t just a transition zone; it’s a smart hub, lined with practical mirror storage cabinets and a sleek niche for custom speakers, with the mirror door strategically positioned not just for function, but to visually expand the perceived space.

Seamless Flow: The Heart of the Home The true soul of this extraordinary home lies in its combined dining and living room, the central hub where the family connects and spends the majority of their time. Here, a magnificent 5-meter-tall ceiling creates an incredibly spacious and open feel, utterly defying the home’s compact footprint. The furniture, including cherished antique pieces personally selected by the clients, adds layers of character and history, weaving a rich design narrative. In a delightful and meticulous touch, an antique door from 1890 served as the direct inspiration for the entire room’s sophisticated color palette. A separate, thoughtfully placed toilet ensures privacy for both family and guests, a detail often overlooked but crucial for a comfortable living experience in smaller designs.

Just a few steps up, you discover the kitchen, thoughtfully elevated to provide a subtle visual separation from the main living area while creating additional storage below. This culinary zone is a dream for any passionate cook, boasting professional-grade appliances including a powerful Viking oven, a gas cooktop, a commercial range hood, and a generous sink. Stainless steel finishes on the benches and shelving perfectly complement the high-end appliances, offering both a sleek, modern aesthetic and an incredibly easy-to-clean surface. Just off the kitchen, stairs lead to a clever balcony-like landing where a washing machine is discreetly tucked away behind a curtain. This same curtain can be extended to create a seamless wall, artfully enclosing the top of the stairs and the bathroom entrance for ultimate privacy.

A clever niche for books was even created using the “dead space” within these stairs.

Vibrant colors and distinct flooring choices for each room emphasize their unique ambiance, reflecting their young occupants’ energy. In contrast, the main bedroom embraces a darker, more serene color scheme, meticulously designed for optimal rest and relaxation. It includes a generous built-in stretch of storage along one wall, providing ample space for clothes and personal items.

Rooftop Oasis and Urban Harmony Further up, a space-saving staircase leads to the rooftop balcony—the widest possible given the plot’s constraints. This urban haven, furnished with custom pieces by the client, features ingenious removable wall panels that transform effortlessly into bench seating or tables, adapting to any need. Underneath the stairs leading to the rooftop, even more storage space for clothes and small items has been cleverly integrated.
